ANNIGONI and Giles

Annigoni, painter of the most famous portrait of the Queen, says:

“He is wonderful, your Giles. I saw him first four years ago, when I arrived in England. I always look for his cartoons. We now have them reprinted in Italian papers. He is very popular there.”

It may seem unlikely that Mr. Annigoni, the eminent painter in the most serious manner, would be amused by Giles, the very English, not-so-serious cartoonist. But Annigoni continues:

“It is a pity that we do not also have cartoonists like Giles. Because he is such a fine artist, such a fine draughtsman, as well as a very funny cartoonist. I appreciate his talent as well as his humour.”

“Now let’s do it like the Guards would do it,’ I think you said, Colonel.”

Annigoni chose the Giles cartoon above as the one that gave him the most pleasure.
